Germany’s space programme

Spacecraft are built in laboratories, but space programmes are planned and paid for somewhere else. In Germany, much of that happens in Bonn.

What the agency does

The German Space Agency at DLR acts as Germany’s space agency and carries out the federal government’s space policy. Its tasks include planning and implementing the national space programme and managing Germany’s contributions to the European Space Agency (ESA). On behalf of the federal government, it represents German space interests worldwide.

On the Space route

That is why Bonn stands on the Space route of the TheScience.fm Atlas, between Noordwijk, where ESA’s spacecraft are tested, and Frascati. The route begins in Pasadena, where robotic missions to the planets are built and flown; that story is told on Pasadena.science.
